Imagine a normal mid-western U.S. town built at the base of a vast forest.  Business thrived here, especially with the advent of several new industries.  Heck, you can't find a more peaceful wilderness getaway than raccoon city.

Then the trouble began.

And it leads back to when the corporation arrived.

Rumors began to spread, and the town was overcome with odd occurrences.  Unidentifiable creatures appeared out of nowhere, and fatal accidents happened at an alarming rate.  Word got out about a sever accident at a mountain lab.  No one in town knew what was happening to their quaint town.

The R.P.D., in an effort to calm the growing fear among locals, recruited several new officers.  Leon S. Kennedy is one of the promising new recruits.  As Leon prepares to join his new unit, he attempts to contact the captain who hired him, but has no luck reaching him.   Unfazed, he continues into Raccoon City to his new job.

At the other side of town, a distraught Claire Redfield searches for her missing brother, Chris.  Claire begins her search in Raccoon City, the last known location of her brother nearly two months ago, only to learn about the "accident" in the forest.  Is Chris still in Raccoon City?

Sadly for Leon and Claire, they are completely unaware of the overwhelming world of horror and despair they both are about to enter...

The game begins on 9.29.98

Leon S. Kennedy, a new rookie cop, is on his first day of duty. Claire, sister of Chris Redfield, is a college student looking for her brother. Once they realize the city is infected by the T and G Virus', they escape to the RPD. Among there investigation they meet up with a little girl Sherry Birkin and a mysterious woman Ada Wong.

After reading Chris' journal, they learn he is off to Europe to try and stop Umbrella's BOW experiments. They escape the RPD and city to the sewers. Here they encounter Sherry's mother and father. Annette tries to explain what has happen, but none of that matters at this point. The outbreak of the G-Virus was due to a team lead by Hunk trying to capture it from it's creator William Birkin. He didn't like being shot... and infects himself with the virus. The story continues to the labs where both viruses are being produced. Annette is killed by her husband, now a monster and Sherry is infected. Claire searches for the cure. Among all of this, Leon and Ada get the unfortunate luck of battling with the T-001 Tyrant. Ada appears to have died and Leon looses grip. They will soon head to the train out of the city and escape with much more to come...

Now instead of the US and PAL versions being "censored," The Japanese versions (Biohazard 2) was made a bit easier; changes in the item and enemy locations and increased firepower for all the weapons. There was also an auto-aiming featured on by default. The game over scenes are even less violent and edited in the Japanese version.

The Dual Shock version was released shortly after the release of Resident Evil 2. It supported the vibrations and analog control of the PlayStation Dual Shock controller. There was also an unlockable mini game, Extreme Battle Mode. This is where you get to play as Hunk and Tofu. You need to find and collect 4 bombs located through out the station. There are 4 characters to choose with 3 difficulty levels. There is also a "Rookie" difficulty setting added to the main game. The Japanese version got an additional "USA Version" mode. The Japanese Dual Shock version also gained a new cheat code which enables the player to play with unlimited ammo for ALL weapons.
