Resident
Evil was ported to the Sega Saturn almost a year after
its release on the Sony Playstation. Although its a
straight port, same storyline, it does have some exclusive
features found only on the Saturn version.
::
The
Sega Saturn version was the first to have an unlockable
'Battle Mode' mini-game. Like the others, there was
a timer and you were scored on how well you did at the
end of the mini-game. You battle from room to room and
the main plot for this Battle Game is to destroy all
enemies in each room. There are two exclusive enemies
not found in the main game or in any other port of Resident
Evil. Unlike CODE: Veronica's mini-game, this Saturn
version does not have infinite ammo or FPV (first person
view).
The
first enemy is a zombified Albert Wesker. All bloody
and arms lurking towards you. Just as slow as the other
zombies and just as weak. The other enemy would be a
gold colored Tyrant. The game itself does include a
new style of the Hunter's known as Ticks. In Chris'
game, you will encounter another Tyrant prior to the
final battle. As you defeat the first Tyrant that kills
Wesker, the Tyrant's dead body starts to smoke and then
melts away. Then out of no where another Tyrant, with
a darker body color and big claw, comes bursting out
of another tube capsule on the opposite side of the
Lab room.
This
port also featured two different outfits for Chris and
Jill. Just like the Playstation versions, you need to
beat the game under a certain time and receive the Special
Key (Closet Key) to obtain these outfits.
When
it comes to the game play and sounds... allot is different.
Loading times when reading files and going from one
room to another is a bit slower on the Saturn. However
the game play seems to move alittle quicker. Lighting
and textures seem to be more clear and smooth due to
the 2D modeling and not 3D (like on the Playstation).
The music is completely different. It's almost like
how the original Playstation version has one soundtrack
and then the Director's Cut with Dual Shock support
has a completely new one. There are some noticable differences
with character and enemey sounds.
The
saving system is as well different. Yes you still need
those Ink Ribbons and have to find the nearest Typewriter.
But with Saturn you don't need a Memory Card. Saturn
systems supported an internal memory system to save
games. This making it alittle easier to save on the
Saturn port.
